Thomas Scheibitz

(1968-)

There are not many living artists whose every new work you would always want to see, but so it is with Thomas Scheibitz, a painter and sculptor born in East Germany in 1968 whose work is gorgeous, original, exquisitely made and highly intelligent: a chain of stars in perfect alignment.

Scheibitz is my favourite artist when I was in China. I re-created some works based on his painting. The colour, the composition, and the whole painting of him usually keep me the feeling neither exaggerated nor gentle.

I have got the way Scheibitz used to show darkness through a corner or a door, as well as the wall rolling a little bit to show something behind.

In recent days, I am interested in Scheibitz's process, and the sculpture and painting are dual interactive procedures in his creation. I have to try this method in my work.

Frank Nitsche

(1964-)

Frank Nitsche (German) is a Postmodern Abstractionist painter whose work focuses on futuristic Constructivism. He has developed a sophisticated visual language, overlapping layers of paint on top of each other, intersecting lines and creating specific forms.

I am addicted to watching Nitsche's painting, and trying to figure out the rules he set up. It is not easy but very interesting like playing a game.

Besides, his works are very large. I hope to see the real work soon. It seems Tate Modern has collected his painting already.

Zaha Hadid

(1950-2016)

Zaha Hadid was an Iraqi-born British architect. She was the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 2004. She was dubbed by The Guardian as the 'Queen of the curve'. She liberated architectural geometry with the creation of highly expressive, sweeping fluid forms.

There is a group of buildings, Wangjing Soho, designed by Zaha Hadid close to my ex-working place. As an ordinary resident of that district, I really love those buildings.  What's amazing is that I could see so different pictures when I drive in different direction passing by them.

The curve and the layer in her architecture are attractive me so much. I also painted those building in Beijing. Moreover, she is amazing in interior design. Stairs, pillars, corridors, and floors cross and overlap each other, as if in a maze. In coming days, I will try to create a work based on her interior design.

Sarah Morris

(1967-)

Sarah Morris has been making abstract paintings and films to investigate what she describes as “urban, social and bureaucratic typologies”. These works, based on different cities, are derived from close inspection of architectural details combined with a critical sensitivity to the psychology of a city and its key protagonists.

I can not deny that Sarah Morris' pictures are so brilliant in complicated perspective and a riot of colour. I know I have to learn those two features from her. Furthermore, how she arranges the shadow and highlight is rather fantastic! That is exactly what I need now.

Franz Ackermann

(1963-)

Franz Ackermann makes exuberant paintings and installations centred on themes of travel, tourism, globalisation and urbanism.

He produced many series about the great cities in Asia, South America and Australia. Ackermann has since created large-scale dynamic installations that are built up from individual components comprising paintings, drawings, photographs, wall drawings and sculptural, billboard-like constructions.

The most charming trait of him is to combine a lot of parts of different architectures into one single work. However, I do not perceive pieces but the whole itself. I will learn the colour, the composition, and the collage from his works.

Wei Ligang

(1964-)

Known as a maverick among China’s contemporary abstract calligraphers, Wei Ligang simultaneously recalls tradition while reconstituting ‘standard’ ink work.

I studied in his studio one years ago, and I was so influenced by his ambition as a successful artist in China. He taught me to practise lines and try to make the lines crazy at the beginning and then let them calm down. Besides, he showed me how to make details in one big stroke(Chinese calligraphy). Furthermore, he let me understand the living and working life of the successful artist including several famous Chinese artist in their own studios, as well as some western artist by movies and documentaries, such as Jackson Pollock and Herbert von Karajan.

Above all, he encourages me to be a true artist.

Barbara Hepworth

(1903-1975)

Barbara Hepworth  was an English artist and sculptor. Her work exemplifies Modernism and in particular modern sculpture.

I admire the sense of minimalist and flowing in her works.

His works are very funny, which always make me laugh and relax.

Simon Callery-the innovative artist

Simon is a very creative and innovative art pioneer. He is keeping on trying different materials and styles, and opening the mind to experiments. His vision is to be a different artist who makes different things in art.

He inspires us to take risks and do experiments instead of making perfect things in the comfort area.
